Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.
Principal Responsibilities
Impact on the Business / Function
Provide counsel on a variety of legal matters, or in a specialist area, including matters that may be complex or have potential for some impact.
To be considered to be a trusted adviser to the business by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner to the legal team supporting the business/product groups.
Provide support and guidance to the business/product groups and the legal team supporting the said business with regard to legal risks arising in jobholder’s area of expertise
Employ legal policies to ensure that the Group’s exposure to global legal risks is managed appropriately within jobholder’s areas of expertise
Customers / Stakeholders [COMPLETE 3-4 AREAS]
Provide prompt, commercial, practical and sometimes complex and or specialized legal advice to the business/product groups.
Be proactive in the provision of legal support and in advising the business promptly of material legal developments and their implications.
Ensure senior legal management is fully briefed on major issues arising in relevant business area and major legislative changes in area of expertise.
Recommend selection of panel law firms and other appropriate external parties.
Leadership & Teamwork [COMPLETE 3-4 AREAS]
Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with all team members within INM LGA, and business departments for which the jobholder is responsible.
If the structure is such, lead, manage, review, guide and support junior lawyers and/or support staff that report to the jobholder.
Participate effectively as part of the INM Legal Team.
Participate in the co-ordination and promotion of initiatives that result in the sharing of legal knowledge and best practices across the Regional / Global Legal Function.
Operational Effectiveness & Control
Provide legal services in a cost-effective manner.
Co-ordinate and manage the approach to legal risk in INM legal and business departments for which the jobholder is responsible, to ensure that the interests of the HSBC Group are adequately protected.
Employ legal risk management policies and controls in relevant business areas.
Assist the business to remain compliant with legal risk management requirements set out in the Group Standards Manual and Legal FIM.
Awareness of the operational risk scenario associated with the role and to ensure that all actions during employment with HSBC take account of the likelihood of operational risk occurring.
Leadership over all legal matters and the management of operational risk.
The jobholder assists the General Counsel -INM, to manage legal risk across the INM RBWM business, in accordance with established policies and procedures. The diversity of HSBC’s business, its geographic spread and the constant changes internally and externally means the diversity of matters which the jobholder is required to manage and advise on is very wide;
The role requires an understanding of the structure of the HSBC Group and its culture and the ability to handle increasingly complex legal issues;
Clients will predominantly be executives in the RBWM business/product groups;
The jobholder must also establish close mutually supportive working relationships with other members of RBWM business/product groups, Regional Legal team and the Global Legal Function.
Works largely autonomously, but seeks management input on unusual situations, highly complex issues, and matters that may pose significant legal, financial and / or reputational risk to the company.
Qualifications
Qualified Lawyer with over 15 years of experience.
Knowledge and experience of banking laws and a working knowledge of the laws in the major jurisdictions in which HSBC operates;
Corporate experience and Compliance experience an advantage, but not essential
Good knowledge of the HSBC Group corporate structures, its business and personnel and a clear understanding of HSBC’s corporate culture;
Some Leadership skills;
Strong ability to prioritise;
Communication and inter-personal skills;
Lateral thinking/problem solving.
